after several weeks, I’m glad to release the first AndroVM images based on Jelly Bean.
This release is based on the following components :
- AOSP 4.1.1_r4 branch
- 3.4 Linux kernel (android-goldfish-3.4 branch) – previous buildroid images were based on a 2.6.29 kernel
The port to 4.1 was not so easy because of some bugs in AOSP (I’ll get back on that later) and because the audio hardware API changed from ICS. Then, I’ve decided to abandon the previous audio library (which was limited to output) and ported the 4.1 Nexus 7 audio library to the VirtualBox environment. The very good side effect is that input audio now works
Please tell me if it works correctly on your setup.
This release introduces a change in storage management : there is now one “system” VDI (virtual disk) and one “data” VDI – that’s a total of 3 VDIs with the sdcard one. This should make upgrade easier as it will be possible to change the system VDI while keeping all data.
OVA files can be found on the new Download page. You’ll find the 3 usual versions (tablet, phone, tablet with phone capabilities) as well as one “google apps” enabled version (based on tablet) and a “google apps” and “houdini” enabled version (also based on tablet) – it seems that the “houdini” libs extracted from the gingerbread intel/orange phone work also correcly on JB. I’m working actively on hardware OpenGL and will release support for it asap.
After releasing the OVAs, I realized that when you keep standard display parameters on the tablet versions (1024×600 with 160 dpi), you will get a “phone interface” (no status bar, notifications on the top of the screen, …). You have to upgrade to a higher resolution (1024×768 at least) to get the “tablet interface”.
Important point : I discourage the use of VirtualBox 4.2 for the moment, it seems many of us get very poor performance using buildroid/androVM images on this version. I’m investigating it…

Hi, what’s the version of virtualbox that this have been tested on ? I try it on virtualbox 4.1.18, Ubuntu 12.04, it start fine but sounds ( both input and output ) not working and I can’t run youtube and games.
Hi I’m using the latest 4.1 vbox version on a mac os host for testing. What’s your host ? You can try to tweak the sound param of the vm.
Dan.
hi.i get an error unfortunately, google search has stopped?
You’re probably not going to be able to run most games anyway, since they tend to be native apps.
Hi,
nice release..
some questions:
*there is plan similar to android-x86 for providing iso’s for installing on usb and using directly gpu opencl at least with amd gpus?
*do you think opengl support will take much effort or will take code from google gpu emulation so it can be soon. can we done say in a month?
Awesome to see the release. I noticed you recommend against VirtualBox 4.2. Currently I use VMware Workstation 8, but noticed a few oddities importing the OVA. Is there a recommended version of VirtualBox which works best or perhaps a brief write up regarding settings to use in VMware?
Thanks again for all of your effort.
Amazing work you’ve done with every release. I’ve been looking forward to your first AndroVM release & you definitely delivered.
I’ll be taking the gapps & houdini VM for a spin. I can definitely confirm that all of your OVAs work great when converted (with relaxed OVA standard conversion) to VMware Player 5 as a Workstation 9.0 VM.
Thanks for your hard work!
does google voice search work?
Hi
Google Search is not working for the moment. It uses an ARM lib which is not supported by houdini even with 4.0 houdini libs. I’m looking for a solution.
Dan.
I can report running androVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r4-20121002-gapps-houdini in VirtualBox 4.2 under Windows 7 64bit with great performance.
Thanks again for your excellent work!
Great can you please tell me if sound works (both output and input) ?
Sound output works well, but not sound input.
I tested sound input with all “Audio Controller” options at VB Audio page. I tried with Voice Search app and some recording apps from market with no success. Is there another easy way to try voice input?
When I try Voice Seatch I get the following in Eclipse LogCat:

Hi
Concerning resolution change don’t you have the AndroVM app for vm configuration ?

Hi Dan!
I’m writing from AndroidVM on Ubuntu 12.04!!!
On Windows 7 is really slow, here it is quite fast and stable. but i prefers so I-m forced to use Linux, too
So far I have activated Google Play and installed Nimbuzz, sounds work out-of-the-box.
Thank you for this new version can’t wait the open gl release
Hi Alex, sound doesn’t work for me on Ubuntu 12.04 using Virtualbox 4.1.18. What’s the version of virtualbox you are using ? Are you using PulseAudio and ICH97 for audio setting ?

I’ve been trying every which way I know to get ‘google play music’ to run on *any* pc-running version of android, androvm included, but it force-closes on every single one. Any ideas?
Hi Dan!
Play Store doesn’t work anymore. I can browse and choose the apps to install, but then a msgbox alert me of errors like DF-BPA-13 or RPC:AEC:0
Any idea of how to fix it ?
Thx, Alex
alex,
I had those problems several times, too. It is not a problem of the VM, but of the Play.
Please, look for my workarounds which I posted some time ago in ex-Buildroid.
volker
I’m having this troubles with my installation. Can you point me where are the solutions. I try to find it but I couldn’t… Thanks.
BTW thanks for the great job.
@eduardo
re – activation of the playstore:
please find my suggestions for solution in my correspondence with alex in this blog.
volker
Hello,
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the repost! Now its working.
Best regards
I would to test the various Android built in VPN functions (eg l2tp+ipsec) with some gateways , but it seems the necessary kernel modules is missing.
@volker
Thank you, I have a backup of all comments and post of buildroid as a Google Reader feed, easy to search contents
Now I will test your workaround..
Other problem that you may encounter eventually with Play:
“Error Processing Purchase DF-BPA-09?
(with a fix that works well for me)
A common error occurs to Android users when they attempt to use Google Play to download apps that says “Error Processing Purchase DF-BPA-09?. The error usually doesn’t allow users to download anything and the problem will reoccur with every attempt.
The following steps usually fix this problem.
1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap Applications.
3. Select the All tab.
4. Locate and tap Google Services Framework (Google Dienste Framework).
5. Select the Clear data button.
6. Tap OK on the warning that appears.
Important: Restart the device, then try to use Google Play. You should now have no problem downloading apps.
Enjoy the playstore again!
volker
@alex
I’m confident that it works for you too.
Alternatively or in addition, you could clear the cache and the data in the Play app.
volker
Sorry, but how to reboot the Android, i am new to Android.
@volker This time don’t work. I have cleared data and then also removed updates, some days ago I installed Nimbuzz with no issues. It seems an autentication problem after automatic updates, maybe Dan could fix it
@alex
did you clear data and cache in both apps, Play and Google Services Framework? And importantly, did you restart the VM prior to using Play?
Good luck,
volker
@alex
Play problem: still another workaround:
==========================
This thread is to provide the solution for Google play store download error – 921. The error message is ‘Error – Update for “xxxxx” could not be downloaded due to an error. (921)’ . If you see the same error, then follow the steps -
1. Menu > Settings > „Accounts and sync“ > click on your google account (email) ? Einstellungen ? dann 2.
2. click ‘Remove account’. Don’t worry, it’s not deleting your physical account. Account related information is still saved in Google.
3. Launch Google Play Store again
4. When asked, use existing account to create the google account.
5. Provide your existing google account information (email & password)
6. try again to download.
=========================
Not sure whether I tested that solution.
Let me know how it works!
volker
Thank you Volker!
Removing my gmail account, then adding it again solved the autentication issue.
Just downloaded *Burger* from Google Play
Clear cached and rebooting had no effect.
Regards, Alex
Thank you Volker!
Resetting gmail account fixed the issue.
Regards,
Alex
@alex
glad to hear that!
Me too, I have the problem that Google Search crashes permanently.

Firefox and Chrome didn’t work in androVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r4-20121002-gapps-houdini.ova
Please make AndroVM app compatible with Vmware to set resolution!
I am experiencing the same problem. How dows one asjust the resolution in VMware Workstation 9?
Resolution change is not yet supported on VMWare – we’re working on it.
Dan.
Resolution adjustment for VMware would be greatly appreciated. It would like to try remote access using VNC, RDP has mouse problems (two pointers) and jerky with both Linux and Windows 7 clients. Thanks for the excellent work.

I ran all three versions, don’t see any soft nav buttons…. are they supposed to be present or are there keyboard equivalents?
Hi Peter,
You can force soft navigation bar with the AndroVM app.
This bar isn’t present on low-resolution phone by default !
Excellent! Great work… pls pls pls keep it up
Many thanks!
Hi Dan!
Google search always crashes in my VM. I have disabled it. Facebook, Twitter, Nimbuzz, Dropbox ok, Angry Birds Space and Burger work but very slowly. Google Play must n not be updated or installing apps fails.
Alex
After the update of Google Play you have to remove/reactivate your Google account.
VirtualBox 4.1.22
Firefox and Chrome don’t work, Angry Birds works but very slow
In Google Play I receive “Your device isn’t compatible with this version.” when trying to install Chrome and Firefox . VirtualBox 4.1.22.

@Jose Benitez: Firefox and Chrome didn’t work in androVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r4-20121002-gapps-houdini.ova
Chrome didn’t work on all android x86 ports. I has something to do with Chrome app and is independant from AndroVM_vbox86-port. I’ve filed an issue (http://bit.ly/VKxVuj) at Chrome developers pages – but they told me, that they won’t support none certified android builds.
@Dan: BTW great work – thx. I’m using it on portable Virtualbox 4.1.18 on Win 7 as host (as Win 8 as well). Sound output works – I haven’t tested sound input.
I’ve blogged a bit about the project – will be online on Monday here (http://bit.ly/RIQ8XE – currently German only).

One issue I have with it under VBox 4.2 on Mac (and had it with Buildroid) is that if the screen times out and it goes back to the slide to unlock screen it is unresponsive and does not respond to the mouse and I can’t “slide to unlock”
You have to press “F1″ to unlock the screen (“fn” key + F1 on Mac)
Dan.
That does the trick. Whether you have to use the fn key on the Mac depends on your keyboard settings, for me F1 key is enough.
Hi! can you show the way how to root it? thank you
As you may notice, lately Xolo has release ICS-x86 software update for Xolo X900:

Unable to get Google Messenger to function. I’m able to install any apps, review my Google e-mail. But Messenger will not show anything like active sessions as comparable to my phone.
HI there!
I really appreciate all your hard work to provide this. I need to connect the VM to Eclipse to test an App. I found under status where it gives an IP address but when i use this with adb ( adb connect 10.0.3.15) it won’t connect. How can i find out an address to connect with? On my first VM (which had loads of other problems) i could type ctrlF1 to get a terminal and type netcfg, but i can’t seem to make this work.
Thanks!
C.W.
oh yeah, i used the vbox86t version.
Hi cwk !
To enable ADB connection, there are 3 steps.
- First, setup the first network adapter to “Host-only”
- Second, go to the AndroVM App and connect to the IP displayed (it must look like 192.168.56.10x)
- Then, enjoy !
Hi Dan!
AndroVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r4-20121002-gapps-houdini.ova

Hi,

Yes

i download it, it can rotate my screen ,but after this, the display messed…
Hello Dan,
Really impressive job !!!
I just tested it on Windows 7 Home, core i7-3610QM, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 650M (2Gb), VIrtualbox 4.1.22
Basic use (use of settings, use of default browser) : worked quite smoothly.
Use of Play Store :
– Identification issue + [DF-BPA-13] error when trying to install apps: use the workaround pointed out by Volker and Alex (remove and add again the google account) => painful but worked fine. I installed Dolphin browser and Angry Bird Space.
– Many apps are not compatible : cannot install
– Dolphin browser : worked fine
– Angry Bird is very slow (looks like frame by frame animation).
I didn’ install the VIrtualbox Extension after importing your ova.
Tell me if you want me to perform more tests.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I use the Android_Tablet_Gapps_Houdini ova.
i installed the phone version on VMware player. it work great.
but i cant activate bluetooth . :/
how can i do so ?

I need to install VirtualBox uest Additions in order to use a folder on my Host Ubuntu OS. However, I do not seem able to do this as I’m required to add a CD which VirtualBox does not allow me to do for AndroVM. I’ve previously done this for my Windows XP guest OS which I installed from a MS DVD. Is this to with AndroVM being a ‘virtual appliance’? If not, how do I do this?
using 4.1.1 houdini
“Google Play Music” – I installed the apk directly, as the play store said it was incompatible. I can run it fine if I have no google accounts set up, but once I set up a google account, Play Music FCs every time I open it. Any ideas? Do I need to specify something to make it run through houdini?
Why doesn’t it work with google voice search or chrome?
Greetings. This is an awesome project. I just had one issue that was a little different than most people’s with the play store. When I attempt to install an app it actually cannot find the SD card to install it on and fails to install it after it downloads? Do you know if there is a work around for this? Thanks in advance!
Cannot get networking up as I could with Buildroid 4.04. Linux host (ubuntu 12.10 x64) / virtualbox 4.1.22 / dell xps m1330. Configured identically.
To be honest, the buildroid 4.04 is the only android vm that I’ve tried that had networking on this machine out of the box.
gotten networking working now, but installing apps gives an sdcard error
For those VirtualBox 4.2 users with problems:
VirtualBox 4.2.2 released and I see great perfomance with androVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r4-20121002-gapps-houdini under Windows 7 64bit.
@emux
VirtualBox 4.2 users with problems:
Unfortunately, I have still boot problems with the latest version of VB 4.2.2. This is on dell latitude D505 under ubuntu linux 10.04. Test was made with the android 4.0.4 VM from May 30, 2012 (which runs under VB 4.1.22).
Should mention that my Lubuntu 12.04 VM boots and runs under the above – mentioned conditions in VB 4.2.2 (preformance similar as under VB 4.1.22).

Works pretty well with VirtualBox 4.2.2 on Windows 7 64bits. It’s a bit slower than ICS Android x86 but here I managed to get immediately network and adb connexion. So thank you for your work ! Merci bien
Thank you so much. AndroVM is going to save me all kinds of suffering. No more five minute boots, no more horrible lag. I run VirtualBox on a daily basis for work, so trying to do KVM based virtualization would be a royal pain. Great to have an emulator that works in VirtualBox.
Do you know if these kernels are compiled with the CONFIG_SWAP=y option?
Swapon doesn’t complain but nothing happens.
shell@android:/ # busybox swapon /dev/block/sdc1
shell@android:/ # cat /proc/swaps

I tried 1G and 64M partitions and then a swap file, neither works.
I’m currently testing on buildroid_vbox86t_4.0.4_r1.1-NOSSE-20120526.ova
Future builds for old machines would be appreciated.
@tord @dan
indeed, as tord, I would also appreciate very much to have future builds for old machines. The present builds for 4.1 do not boot on my Pentium M machine. This is probably due (?) to the 3.4 kernel because the 4.0.4 builds worked well.
Could you probably provide a future build for old machines with PAE disabled kernel?
volker
Yep I forgot to adjust kernel and build options to work on old systems. I’ll include it in next build to be released during the coming week.
Dan.
good news!!!

Hi, on a ACER Iconia Tab W500 with Windows 7 32bit very poor performance and I can not use directly the touch display to use Android. I have to use a mouse emulation but not good for touch-only devices. Androix-x86 works very fast on it in a dual boot
Awesome!! Reading all these posts is very humbling. It would be nice if I could offer specifics like some of the comments, yet I am unaware of the exact things to report.
I can simply offer my observation which is Dan’s work, while pioneering as his is the first release, has a tremendous amount of lag in comparison to the x86 4.0 RC2.
I’m on Win7, using VirtualBox 4.1.22, and tested both VMs with identical hardware power applied to each. Looking forward to future releases.
A humble suggestion:
Perhaps, you might consider hosting the files on sourceforge, codeplex, or google code and maintaining this blog as the projects official site.
i am running androVM_vbox86t_4.1.1_r4-20121002-gapps-houdini.ova on VirtualBox 4.2.2, it was giving slow performance, and then stuck on Lock screen. after Reset from VirtualBox now it is not being started.

Is there any way to load a custom .apk into the VM?
Will the google apps be available on the P phone version soon?
1. Two solutions :
a. Connect witv adb from your host and use ‘adb install xxx.apk’
b. Send a mail to you with the apk, read your mail from the VM and install it from here
2. Yes next release

Hi Dan!
Any news about AndroVM accelerated on Mac OSX ?
I have some time to spend on a new demo screencast…
Alex
Running here. Have to find some time to package it. I fly tonight, I hope to have enough time during flight.
Dan.
Hi Dan,
When you package it, can you provide insight on how you got it to work? The reason being that I’m porting Android to a public display, using Virtualbox to virtualize the hardware (I’ve compiled my own kernel to include the display touchscreen and hardware) and the only thing missing is the acceleration part. The displays have a Mac Mini attached so technically, it should work.
Thanks,
Denzil

volker
Is there any chance you could provide your original iso/any disk image files you used to install it onto VB? So we could try and get it working on a physical disk?
Would there vbox86p (phone) version with Google Apps and Houdini? or could the vbox86t with Google Apps and Houdini set as the phone resolution (such as 480×800 or 720×1280)?
vbox86p version to be released soon with gapps & houdini
Could I modify the resolution by editing any configuration file or just fixed when building AndroVM?
Well, just remark for me:
/system/bin/bd-vbox-prop set vbox_graph_mode 800×480-16
with using command line.
What is the difference between x86T and x86TP and x86P??
Hi,
The P version is a phone build
The T version is a tablet build
The TP version is a tablet-phone (Tablet with phone capabilities) build
Just use the one that matches the most to your use-case !
Hello,
Thanks for the work, but I have the “Cannot install on USB storage or SD card” Issue on paid apps too. Free Apps are working. I already tried some “asec” workarounds but none works. On Android-x86 ICS the are working. Thanks for a fix in advance.
how do you setup the network ?
(how can you access console to
try via netcfg ethx ? )
When I try to install a game (Legend of the Cryptids), it downloads the game, no problem, but then when the download is finished, gives an error saying “Can not install on storage or sd disk” and doesn’t install the game. I saw a few comments above. But unlike those, this one is a free app (free to download, then you pay for some in-game stuff if you want to). Any idea about what might be causing this?
Hi Ozan,
Which version of the OVA are you using ?
It works for me, using P version GAPPS + Houdini

Sam.
Hmm.. I might have used the previous version. Need to check it when I get back to home. Thanks for the reply.
Alright. Apparently I had installed the previous version. The problem is gone in the one you suggested. Game installed, but not working. I was not really expecting it to work, so that is ok. Maybe in the later versions.
gotta say cracking but of work, i was complaining about the slugishness but boosting the gpu ram to 128MB sorted that totally out,
its running the t with gapps happy on a win8/vmbox on amd phenom core and a 5780
needed a few apps to make it userfriendly like (quick shutdown and rotate locker) overall a cracking bit of work and great for troubleshooting (or proving the customer wrong) on android/exchange issues, Thanks again
